Where the Festa dei nonni comes from

Italy established the Festa dei nonni by law in 2005. The date, 2 October, was chosen to coincide with the Catholic feast of the Guardian Angels, drawing a gentle line between the protective role of angels and that of grandparents, who so often watch over their families. In Italy the day is marked with time together, small gifts, and the forget-me-not flower, chosen as its symbol.
